MIX TAPE REVIEW:

When you think of American rap locales one thinks of places like ATL, LA, NY. Even Seattle Washington has had its share of popular rap artists over the years. Artists like Sir Mix-A-Lot, Blue Scholers, The Boom Bap Project, No Clure come to mind. A fresh new Mix Tape reently slid across my desk from Seattle's own Tev The Vet who just released his latest mix tape entitled Level Headed.

This Mix Tape kicks things off with “Composure.” This first piece sliters across the ears nicely. It's a smooth prelude of sorts that’s sets the stage rather well for this production with its smooth hip hop groove, milky rap flow & infections persona. This track in quite impressive with silky rap delivery from Tev The Vet making a solid first impression. Track 2 “Cath my Breath” dishes out yet another hypnotic groove with its heartfelt rap delivery, solid low end groove support & a grand slam chorus. On this track Tev The Vet gets vox back up from the likes of Cloudd, & Young Cam. Track 3: one of my favorites “The Way I was Told” delivers apocalyptic rap flow that’s hot to the touch, with yet another hooky chorus & impressive vocal harmonies. As this CD slowly unfolds I can hear many rap influences reminiscent of classic  Biggie Smalls, Jay Z, Big L, & even old school Ghetto Boyz & Too Short. Along the way you can’t help but notice a lot of impressive musical soundscapes layered in the music. The mixing is brilliant, & packed to the hilt with things like sound effects & sampling that make their point with  smooth as silk keyboard & synthesizer accents. The beats are thick as a brick providing solid low end punch, & impr4essive hi end touches. The CD has many musical flavors, from hip hop, rap, jazz, R&B, & even psychedelic rock. You will find everything from clever rhymes, addictive melodies, lyrics that are thought provoking. Now turning out attention to Tev The Vet - he is a marquee up & comer & should be treated as such. Some tracks are funny & up beat providing old school grooves, while others are dark & foreboding. Some are even psychedelic like my personal favorite ”Never Know.” A few tracks are extremely melodic like “I’ll be Seeing You.” But as expected a few tracks hit you right between the eyes like “Hussel” & “Perception” The Mix Tape has something for just about everyone & ends with Track 8: “Shooting to the Stars” the perfect faille statement for a Mix Tape of this caliber.

It's safe to say there are some slight timing errors here & there with respect to Tev's rap delivery. For this he needs to sit even within deeper in the pocket if he's wants to swim in the seep end of the pool with other world class rappers. Also for a Mix Tape it' a bit short overall.

Song for song, pound for pound Level Headed by Tev The Vet is a powerful Mix Tape. Like a heavy weight fighter this production goes the full 12 rounds, & never once lets its guard down. It has everything from raw intensify, clever lyrics, to songs that are well crafted & hold your attention span perfectly. As a whole this Mix Tape possesses allot of variety, & versatility. It delivers the typical in your face urban swagger you would expect from a rap production. Even more impressive is the strong production value, infectious rap grooves & the arsenal of rappers Tev brings to the table (Cloudd, Young Cam, Steuey Newton, & Yung Vett). So if you want an action packed Mix Tape - Tev The Vet not only keeps it real, he will suck you in like a powerful drug & never let you go.
