EP REVIEW:

Toronto (CAN) based Singer/Songwriter/Composer Tallan M.D. is preparing to release his upcoming EP Delirium to the public in early 2014. He was gracious enough to let IMD check out three tracks fro the EP ahead of time. The 3 songs are as follows: Avant Garde, These Days, and Howl.

First up Track 1 “Avant Garde” serves up an enticing bass ridden groove meshed against hypnotic lyrical content, strong melody and impressive vocals from Tallan. This intro track sets the tone rather well for a fun yet eccentric EP like this. Track 2 gently takes flight with “These Days": a soothing acoustic lullaby that gradually builds into a passionate rock ballad complete with hypnotic vocal presence and a grand slam chorus. Track 3 “Howl” dishes out yet another superb track with its pulsating lo end beat, and impassioned vocal fee, and impressive lyrical content. As these songs slowly unfolded I could hear many musical influences reminiscent of classic Talking Heads, Blind Mellon, Beck, INXS, and perhaps a dash of Franz Ferdinand, Lady Gaga and Iggy Pop. I would classify this music as Alternative Rock, with a slight aftertaste of Electronica, Ambient Pop, Alternative Folk and even Folkish Sadcore. The songs themselves are addictive, eccentric, fascinating, and very interesting - all reflections of Tallan himself. One can't notice passionate and powerful subject matter delivered between the spoken word, with a heavy dose of satire on the side. The musicianship, sampling and production touches from Tallan M.D. are rock solid across the board. Tallan M.D. showcases rock solid production instants throughout. Besides the 4 piece standard you will also notice things like thick low end beats and rhythms, impressive sampling, well placed vocals, effective ambient touches, and lush harmonies. Tallan M.D. is an accomplished composer, musician,  vocalist no doubt. He is the quintessential rock star and reminds me of a modern day version of Beck. Equally as impressive is the how Tallan M.D. makes the (singer to listener) vocal connection with his songs. He has an appealing timber and crisp, sharp baritone. Tallan M.D. also takes many impressive vocal risks throughout the EP indicating to me a strong, confident vocal ability. His voice sounds in the vein of Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon) and maybe a dash of David Bowie. All songs are short and sweet musical experiences, never too winded, never to short. All engineering aspects check out well as the EP possesses think low end punch and crystal clear high end clarity. My top pick is “Howl.” These latest songs from Tallan M.D. deliver in grad fashion and provide a  tantalizing snapshot of clairvoyant artist definitely worth checking out.

I typically deduct 1 star for EP releases. The full-length release is a more complete snapshot to judge an artist or band by at any given point in time.

In close Delirium by Tallan M.D. is a highly original and fascinating musical experience from start to finish. The music is fresh and highly entertaining. It’s strong suit – its amazing vocal presence and impressive songwriting finesse by Tallan. The songs are extremely melodic, passionate, and captivating. All these songs have a ring of truth to them and are boldly honest in a comical way. The songs are short and sweet musical experiences, each one possessing unique personality, flair, and signature groove. Tallan M.D. is a surging artist armed with a brilliant perspective an amazing voice and a vivid imagination. Along with the music Tallan M.D. has got an effective visual as well. Speaking of which be sure and check out the 2 videos liked below. I must admit Delirium sucked me in like a powerful drug and refused to let go long after these songs were over. This usually indicates he is something special about the artist or band in question. Thus deserving praise, recognition and musical fame at the international level.
