'amazing musicianship - world class songwriting"
- INDIE MUSIC DIGEST:-
I recently had the privilege of reviewing the latest CD by Steve Oliver entitled "Global Kiss." Song for song, note for note “Global Kiss” is an impressive musical production from start to finish. Each song is a short & sweet musical experience never to short, never to winded. Each one possessing a unique musical personality & signature groove to call it’s own. Smooth Jazz fans will love this CD as it fills the sonic space peacefully & unobtrusively. Sure the music is overly synthetic, the performances are primarily basic rock based 4/4 rhythms – but hey that’s smooth jazz folks. Along the way you will catch brilliant flashes of amazing musicianship & world class songwriting as well. Bands like The Rippingtons, Joe Sample, The Jazzmasters & yes even Steve Oliver get a lot of credit from me as they take the edge of a million or so elevator rides around the world each & every day. They live for moments like this & we love them every second for it.
IMD I was really impressed with your latest CD “Global Kiss.” Could you tell us little about the title & what inspired the actual name “Global Kiss”?
SO Thanks, I did a tour in Europe, Germany, Spain, London, Asia, and was inspired by all the different cultures musically, and I have always been a fan of world music so I wanted to write and record an album thinking of my version of world music. Being the positive person I am I came up with title Global Kiss thinking about the world in general, The world needs a global kiss right now. That was my thought.
SO I have been playing Guitar for 30 years.
SO That's a tough one, I am addicted to music so my list is huge Pat Metheny, Al dimeola, Santana, Chet Atkins, The Beatles, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Steve Morse, Trevor Rabin, Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, Ralph Towner, Oregon, Iron Butterfly ,Kansas, Jan Akkerman, Andeas Seqovia, John Williams, Michael Hedges, Will Akkerman.
SO Pat Metheny I love his composing and Ralph Towner also
SO Yes, Many times, He is a guitarist writer,We are doing a cruise together over Valentines weekend2011 and I am looking forward to that. Flashes of freeman "wow" thanks for the compliment!!! I am a fan.
IMD What are the biggest things you want fans to take from your music?
IMD What is the best concert you each have been to over the years?
SO I just went and saw Pat MMtheny and went backstage and had a nice chat. I got to play at the Playboy Jazz Fest, What a blast!!
IMD Can you tell us a bit about your Carvin guitars, & why you like them so much?
SO I helped to create two guitar's with Carvin that I can play piano, violins sitars, anything a keyboard can play I can play the same sounds on the Guitar via MIDI. These guitars are a big part of my show and recording, The possibilities are endless, I love them.
IMD I especially liked the songs “Ba Aye, & “Angel Amore” could you tell us more about those particular songs & What the musical inspiration was?
SO Thanks! Ba Aye was a word I was singing when writing this tune it has a strong Brazilian flavor, It is fun to play and sing. Angel Amour is a tune where it features my Guitar synth and played live in the studio with my drummer Humberto Vela and myself, A great way to end the album.
IMD What’s next for Steve Oliver?
SO I am always working in the studio I have 10 albums ready!!! I look forward to playing live and producing other artist!!
