CD REVIEW:

New York based singer/songwriter Paul Collica releases his latest CD entitled “It’s Not Me…It’s You” in 2011.  Paul is no stranger to the music business having been in numerous bands and had his music featured in Feature Films and TV Commercials.

The CD quickly takes flight with “Medicate Me” a dynamic guitar driven groove that serves up steady rock rhythm against catchy vocal melodies and hooky chorus from Collica. Track 2 is hands down my personal favorite “Fast Forward” shifts gears with its smooth flowing beat, though provoking lyrical content and a grand slam chorus. Track 2 evolves into a solid rock groove with clever lyrical content and impressive vocal passion - all in all an amazing piece. Track 3 “Bleed it Out” is a hypnotic track with driving rock rhythm, impressive musical ambience and heartfelt vocal delivery. As the CD slowly unfolds I can hear many musical influences reminiscent of classic Live, John Mayer, Keith Urban and perhaps a splash of Jack Johnson and even Weezer. This CD makes a pretty solid first impression. Right from the start you will notice rich musical textures and ambience overflowing everywhere, full of warmth, variety and strong melodic structure. I would classify this music as catchy power pop, rock, with a slight aftertaste of alternative rock. The songs themselves are addictive and upbeat, complete with positive, carefree subject matter. The musicianship is pretty solid across the board. Make no bones about it Collica has good production instincts and knows how to bring the passion and the production touches. Along the way you will notice lush layers of instrumentation layered everywhere. Besides the 4 piece standard you will also catch impressive things well placed solo guitar, impressive rhythm section and well placed vocal harmonies. Collica’s voice works well across the board as he fills the sonic space peacefully and unobtrusively. I might add Collica brings allot of vocal passion to the table with powerful messages and inspiring lyrical content. All songs are compelling, feel good musical experiences. From heartfelt No Way” and “3 Days 10 Hours” to passionate “Maybe” and Untitled” to rocking “Confidential” this CD has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with Track 11 “Out of Touch” the perfect finale statement for a CD of this caliber.

It’s fair to say Collica’s sound is a bit repetitive overall. Track for track, song for song it’s hard to tell one song from the next. Perhaps a few more musical touches would spice up the production a bit. Things like keyboard and synthesizer accents, moog bass horns, percussion, and even more solos and vocal harmonies would take the edge off this. This can be done without compromising Colica’s musical foundation. Most singer/songwriters also need to put an emphasis on visuals in order to create an emotional attachment with their fan base. Looking at the CD there is no picture of Collica anywhere on the CD. CD cover art and title miss the mark for me. All songs over 3.5 minutes tend to drag you to the finish line.

It’s Not Me…It’s You by Paul Collica is an impressive musical production from start to finish. The music is consistent; the messages are upbeat, carefree and sung from a positive perspective. It’s strong suit – the wide musical variety and overall vocal passion from Collica.  He possesses enough musical talent and songwriting prowess to be extremely dangerous. The musicianship is first rate. Once again the vocals, vocal harmonies and melodic accents are brilliantly placed and extremely well crafted. The messages are packed to the hilt with rich conventional wisdom offering hope and compassion. As a listener I was entertained the entire time. “It’s Not Me…It’s You” will not only make your day a brighter place, but will inspire you in the process.
