CD REVIEW:

Jacob Acosta's music has many prolific paths. With Race You There and Roll Acosta he's released 'Acts of Treason' (2009), 'The Dawn... EP' (2010), 'Catalyst EP', (2011), 'The Dark EP' (2011) 'This Dreamt Existence', produced by John Vanderslice (2012), Race You There at Bisbee Royale EP (2013), 'Chants of Diplomacy'(2013), and now he debuts his newest release, “For The People, By The People” (2014).

The CD methodically takes to flight with jumpy intro piece “Walls.” This song serves up infectious rocked out musical ambience against mesmerizing vocals, hypnotic Americana-Blues guitar, well placed harmonies and driving rock rhythm that gently leads you by the hand down the path of trippy musical indulgence. Track 2 “White fire” shifts gears a bit with its stark intro, trippy alternative-folk rock vibe and infectious keyboard accents and infectious vocal flair from Acosta meshed against impressive groove and well placed slide guitar. Track 3 “So Fine” is an impressive folk-rock-blues piece that is full of musical peaks and valleys, impressive foot stomping groove that flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition. By track 3 this CD hits solid stride delivering many impressive and colorful songs back to back. As the CD slowly unfolds I can hear many musical influences reminiscent of a The Neighborhood, Beck, Fun, Cake, Black Keys and Death Cab for Cutie. On the other side of the sonic spectrum I can also hear brief flashes of They Might be Giants, XTC, Elvis Costello, and The Flaming Lips. I would classify this music as trippy psychedelic blues-based singer/songwriter, Alternative Rock with a fun and eccentric Psychedelic, Indie College Rock aftertaste. The CD at times presents brilliant peak and valley flow via a strong colorful artistic perspective from Acosta behind the mic. Besides the four piece standard you will also notice rich layers of organ, electric piano, melodic keyboard accents, sporadic soundscapes, rhythm guitar, solo guitar, lush harmonies, low end beats, harmonica, sonic vocals, exotic sound effects and enticing melodies - all built on a thick as a brick rhythmic foundation. Acosta showcases a highly impassioned and infectious singing and writing style that takes no prisoners. He's the quintessential artist. His musicianship and compositions are pretty solid across the board as Acosta is clearly letting it all hang out in a fun way with these pieces. All production aspects check out. CD possesses solid low end punch and crystal clear high end clarity. Acosta has an effective baritone and all harmonies are effective and well placed. I like his falsetto, power and passion. Acosta take many impressive vocal risks throughout the CD indicating to me a strong and confident vocal ability. At times his voice reminds me a bit of James Taylor – to go with this I see Jacob Acosta as a more modern-day, cutting edge version of James Taylor. From invigorating psychedelic “In the Morning” to heartfelt “These Eyes” to impassioned “Fullgrown” to thought provoking “Where to go” and melodic “Never Again”. CD ends with Track 9 “Oh Rock n’ Roll” the perfect “very cleverly brilliant” finale statement for a CD like this.

All songs under 3 minutes tend to sound like incomplete statements to me. The CD is a bit short with only 9 Tracks. Perhaps 3-5 more tracks are needed to make it a fully loaded CD release.

“For the People by the People” by Jacob Acosta is a trippy, zany, fun, interesting, compelling musical journey. This DIY composer, producer, musician, visionary is making waves for himself beyond just music. At the end of the day Jacob Acosta is a musical mastermind and powerful musical force any way you look at him. During my initial research I discovered he’s quite the hot topic live. His strong suit is its amazing eccentricity, producers touch and song for song musical flow. Acosta gets high marks from me for delivering a captivating yet carefree vibe - nice touch. “For the People by the People” will be a real joy for those listeners out there who want flowing trippy musical experience to fill their atmosphere. This straight forward, "short but sweet" easy to digest musical format makes for a great musical experience many will enjoy. I recommend you just hit play, close your eyes and see where the journey takes you via “For the People by the People by Jacob Acosta.”
