Watch the Rain (EP)
Psychedelic Rock, Alternative Rock, Punk
Weakness: Cover Art, More solos, EP release.
Goodnight Tonight is an Alternative Rock band from Kent, Ohio. Emily Gambone leads on the vocals and guitar, Holly Camp is on the bass and Logan McNeal on drums and vocals. The trio has been playing together since 2008 when they started their first band, Noize from the Basement. Working with producer Mike Brown of Lavaroom Recording Studio, they started their career with a 6 song self-titled EP. They also worked with Brown at Lavaroom when they recorded their full length album, "Bird's Eye View," which was released in 2011. Their latest EP release entitled “Watch the Rain” Was released in 2013.
The EP quickly takes lifts off the ground with rocking intro piece “The Only Thing I Know”. This song serves up infectious rocked out guitars painted against mesmerizing vocals, hypnotic lyrical content and dynamic rhythms that quickly lead you by the hand down the path of trippy psychedelic rocked out indulgence. Track 2 “Poison” keeps things rocking with its psychedelic groove, impressive touches and accents painted against a grand mosaic of melody and heartfelt lyrical content. The striking musical flow of this piece brilliantly moves like an ocean across the ears. Track 3 “Thunderstorm” is an impressive impassioned piece that is quite dynamic, full of musical peaks and valleys that flow and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition. This piece is remarkably striking to the ears as well with its Alternative Rock touches and hypnotic chorus. As the CD slowly unfolds I can hear many musical influences reminiscent of a classic Cake, The White Stripes, Hey Monday, Maroon 5, and Cassadee Pope. I would classify this music as high energy Psychedelic Rock, Punk, Alternative Rock with an Indie College Rock flair. I can also hear experimental music with classic remnants of Alternative Rock. The CD presents brilliant flashes of soulful ambience and upbeat, carefree artistic perspective. Besides the 4 piece standard you will also notice lush harmonies, and enticing melodies all built upon a thick as a brick rhythm section. Gambone showcase impressive singing and songwriting skills throughout. Her signing is pretty solid across the board. I especially like the way this band harmonizes together. Rhythm section delivers pure grooved magic I love all guitar solos as well. These 3 have clearly proves themselves with this short but sweet EP release. They got solid instincts. All engineering aspects check out well. CD possesses thick low end punch and crystal clear high end clarity. During my initial research I discovered this band is quite the hot topic live around NE Ohio. Playing live, Goodnight Tonight unleash their cosmic fury and induces the same in their audience. It’s hard, it’s heavy, it’s rock and roll, re-imagined and reinvigorated. From melodic “Because of You” to hypnotic “Lieutenant James” this CD has something for just about everyone. The EP ends with “Back On My Feet Again” the perfect finale statement for a EP of this caliber.
I'm not crazy about the bland cover art. It's simply not compatible with the music and unlike the band it lacks creativity, soul and personality. There is no picture of the band anywhere on the CD or inserts. To go with this there is a lot of blank, unused space inside on the inserts – a big marketing misstep and missed opportunity to say the least. II also wish I heard a few more guitar solos here and there, I can’t recall even 1. I typically deduct 1 star for EP releases. The full length releases is the most complete snapshot to review an artists by at any given moment in time.
This latest 6 song EP teaser is a wild and exciting ride. Its strong suit is it’s amazing psychedelic rock n' roll, pop ambience and song for song musical flow. This CD will be a real joy for those listeners out there who want flowing poppy psychedelic rock ambience to fill their sonic space. I recommend you just hit play, close your eyes and see where the journey takes you. Goodnight Tonight rocks the house any way you slice it and really sets a solid rock standard in NE Ohio.
