"Gioia's music gives us life, joy, & hope for all humanity."
- INDIE MUSIC DIGEST:-
Male vocalist, singe/songwriter Gioia gives us a sneak preview of his upcoming sophomore release “Flawless” via this 6 song EP sampler. "Flawless" is to be released later on this year. Gioia hails from Boston, Massachusetts and there is a powerful story behind this latest release. Gioia was recently involved in a car accident, and during the recovery process he wrote the lyrics and melody for one of the songs on this sampler entitled : “Angel on your Shoulder”. The song itself was inspired by this recent spiritual and life changing event, but more importantly it’s a microcosm of what Gioia's message is all about. As an artist Gioia's music gives us life, joy, and hope for all humanity. Almost as if as he has.........well an angel on his shoulders.
IMD -"Flawless” is your sophomore release, how do you feel it differs from your previous release?
GIOIAMy first release was more soft rock/adult contemporary in style. "Flawless" is much more where my heart is musically. It's more pop, more dance, more fun. It's the type of music I secretly always wanted to record but avoided because I thought dance music was for kids. Deep down inside though, I'm still a kid at heart and I love dance music so I said to myself, "Screw it, I'm going for it!". And I'm very glad I did because I'm having a blast writing, recording and performing it.
IMD When is it scheduled to be released?
GIOIA Feb 20th, 2010
IMD As I understand it the band Kiss ironically inspired you to be a recording artist?
GIOIA Yes they did. I first got hooked on them after listening to their 4th album, "Alive 1". "Cold Gin" and "Black Diamond" were my 2 favorite songs on the album. From there I just became a huge fan along with many of my friends. Seeing them live as a kid was unreal, with all the stage effects and costumes, etc., And we all had our favorite "Kiss" band member, mine was Ace Freely, their lead guitar player. I vividly remember covering my room with "Kiss" posters and my mom and dad freaking out, thinking they were losing their son to the dark side. Good times! Regardless, I think I turned out OK, except for this music addiction thing I've got!
IMD Could you share with us what inspired the Song “Angel on your Shoulder”?
GIOIA I was in a horrible car accident where my tiny Toyota Tercel flipped over seven times. At the time of the accident, it was 3am in the morning. No one else was on the road and I was totally alone. After I failed one last time to crawl out of my flipped over, crushed car, I felt a spiritual presence, and I heard a soothing woman's voice say to me, "Everything's going to be all right. Help is on the way". A few minutes later, an ambulance arrived and the EMT's confirmed to me that no one had actually called them about my crash. They were just coincidentally, "passing by" my car on the way to the hospital with another patient. At the hospital, I spent 3 days on life support, near death, battling all the trauma from the crash along with a 106 degree fever. During my recovery, inspired by what I considered the "angel" on my shoulder and inspired by all the love and support I received from my family and friends while on life support, I wrote the melody and lyrics for "Angel on your Shoulder".....True story.
IMD Who are some of your influences both vocally and musically?
GIOIAVocally- Seal, Bono, Simon LeBon, Bon Jovi, Robin Thicke and Rob Thomas. Musically, my musical taste are so vast. I'm a fan of everything from 80's rock, to the Andrew Lloyd Webber's "the Phantom of the Opera", to Jay-Z but as far as personal influences go; Madonna, Lady Ga Ga,
Rihanna, Rod Stewart, and Justin Timberlake.
IMD What kind of connection do you wish to make with your listeners?
GIOIA My songs are usually about love of some kind; whether it's romantic love, love for our planet or love of our fellow man, love is usually the theme. So I hope my music can inspire people to come together regardless of their race, color or creed and be kind to one another.
"I hope my music can inspire people to come together regardless of
their race, color or creed."
IMD Do you intend on touring in support of “Flawless”
GIOIA I love performing live so a tour is defiantly in the works. As soon as the video for "Angel on your Shoulder" is finished shooting, I plan on getting the tour started.
IMD As I understand it, the production was done entirely by Marc Soucy of AudioMusicVoice and Jared Hancock of Surefire Music Group? What was it like working with both of them?
GIOIA They've both been great. They are both super talented, very creative and very easy to work with. Marc is an accomplished composer and his talent is at the heart of every track on the album, except for "Angel on your Shoulder" who I co-wrote with Jared. Jared is superb with beats, vocals and harmonies, which he produced for the entire album and he did such a great job creating the sonic atmosphere that I envisioned for "Angel on your Shoulder". He totally captured the moment of the song. The 3 of us all bring different tastes, style and ideas to the table and it shows in the diversity of the finished tracks.
IMD My favorite track is “Real” can you tell me what inspired that song?
GIOIA Oh that's another good story! I once had a serious, romantic relationship with a woman who was torn between me and another man, but her attraction to the other guy was more about his money and status than about love. Her and I both knew there was true love between us but it basically got down to the point where I emotionally needed "more". So I told her she had to decide what meant more to her; our "real" love or her materialistic addiction to this other man. For some, choosing between true love or money can be a tough one. It defiantly was for her.
IMD So what’s next for Gioia?
GIOIA Wrap up the final tracks on the album, shoot and edit the video for "Angel on your Shoulder" and then, promote, promote, promote! There's definitely no rest in sight that's for sure. And I do hope to spread a lot of positively, love and good vibes along the way!
