INTERVIEW: Chad Frey
by Cyrus Rhodes
Audiorape by Chad Frey is a compelling musical statement from start to finish. Its strength Ė the raw song for song intensity and solid musical performances from Frey. The music is dirty, rock solid, heavy and consistent. The messages are vocal intensely may cause your ears to bleed. Kudos goes out to the intensity, passion & overall vocal presence of lead singer Chad Frey. If this artist gets the ship righted insofar as some of the engineering aspects Ė I would very much like to check out there next release for sure.
IMD What do you want fans to take from your music?
CF I want people to know that the music exists and its out there for them to enjoy and tellíem to buy it. All of my releases are available at CD BABY & iTunes.
IMD Who are some of your top musical influences?
CF Michael Jackson , Nirvana , Metallica , Green Jelly. Just to name a few.
IMD What was the best concert you have ever been to?
CF It has to be when Green Jelly came to canton in July 8 2010. Flawless show , Took pictures , met the singer and his wife Brenna, Filmed the concert with my camera , Autographs from Bill Manspeaker and Mike Odd from Rosemaryís Billygoat. Another great show would be Chris Ballew from The Presidents of USA came to the Hudson library to do a free show promoting his latest project Caspar Babypants in September 2009. Anything from him is amazing. Even if its kids music it didnít matter. You can see the concert footage I filmed on youtube.
IMD Tell us a bit about your latest album ďAudiorapeĒ?
CF Itís a 9 track rarities collection. New versions performed by 2/3rds of mugshot from Akron. Derek on guitar and Adam on drums. Ronnie on bass whoís in a cover band. Filled in and delivered. Also it has unreleased tracks from the marching on your parade era. Thatís the theme all around it.
IMD Whatís the best and worst things about being based in NE Ohio?
CF Great musicians came from this state. Thatís the best part. Worst thing about Ohio ? everything , I donít like it here , rather be else where.
IMD Is there a song on this latest CD that stands out as being your personal favorite?
"I like poking fun at super groups like Audioslave cause they get played almost every hour on the radio at the time..."
- Chad Frey -
CF Iím happy with the new versions of audiorape , donít eat the food , kill the tv (for now I am free) and shoot shoot your troubles away. Iím glad I took the opportunity of making the songs meant to be played by a band. Not one guy doing all the music. Instead of regret and thinking what could have been down the road.
IMD Whatís the best thing about performing live?
CF Funny thing is I never played live. If I could fine a permanent background band who knows? If they like it they Ďll be more shows. If not they donít deserve one.
IMD Any touring scheduled to support? If so how long is the tour?
CF Nope , If thereís a show I will promote every album I ever done. 8 releases total. Good enough to make there heads spin.
IMD Whatís next for Chad Frey?
CF Looking for a new studio to record the next album. New people to work with producers , A band behind me , location most important , something close to home. That would be my huge follow up since working on 2 albums back to back. Say it again and begging for more came out in 2010.
IMD Where did the name and image of audiorape come from?
CF For one my thoughts on the music industry at the time and even till this day. Second I like poking fun at supergroups like Audioslave cause they get played almost every hour on the radio at the time. The image of an ipod chasing a cd was an idea I had for a t shirt while recording marching on your parade in 2007/2008. The shirts are finally made into reality in 2011 (25 made). I have some left , they can buy it as a cd/t shirt combo on ebay or contact me for ordering info. I Love the image so much it became the cover for the album.
IMD I notice that The Wicked Witch is a cover song you did on marching on your parade and also appeared on your latest release Audiorape. What inspired you to do a remake of that song?
CF My parents have it in there collection on vinyl when I was little. Its off from snagglepuss tells the story of the wizard of oz released in 1965 from hanna-barbera records.
IMD Whatís more interesting about this is thereís no information about the song on the web.
CF No details about who wrote it , the lyrics , not even a music sheet of what chord is in ! This became a challenge. The person who I worked with Nick Malter at the time didnít know how to play the song and had to ask his college professor to ask what key is that in ? it was that difficult but the results paid off. I wanted to do the song because itís a little outdated and I want to make it sound more current so it would never go out of style.
IMD Tell me about We All Fall?
CF That one didnít make the cut on marching on your parade released in 2008. The original name is called ďFallĒ after recording it. Then changing the name of it a few years later and it just feels right. I donít want to think of it as a filler even its only one minute but still amazing altogether. It was gonna be recorded again with a band last year but never got around to it. There's 2 versions of it. The one is finally released on this collection and the other will never be heard in the light of day. They put auto-tune and echoes on my voice on that one and it sounds horrid.
IMD Did you come up with lyrics for Donít Eat The Food from reading Morgan Spurlockís Donít Eat This Book or is it a strange coincidence?
CF Hard to believe but yes I did and I met him when he came to Akron at E.J. Thomas Hall in February 12 2007. I bought the book before the show started and had him signed it and had a picture took with him afterwards.
IMD Where can they find updates on your music?
CF Thereís myspace , facebook , twitter @chadfreymusic , jango, youtube lyricalicon9 & freynationrecords and reverbnation.
